Free browser conversion
Supported free-tier files are processed locally in the browser. GetMarkdown does not intentionally transmit the selected file contents to its servers for that conversion path.
The browser downloads runtime and package resources needed for conversion. Ordinary network requests for the website and those resources can include standard technical information such as IP address, user agent, requested URL, and request time; they do not need the contents of the selected document.
Accounts
Pro requires a free account. Accounts are provided by Clerk, which stores your email address and sends the one-time sign-in codes. GetMarkdown keeps your email address, credit balance, purchase and plan records, and your recent Pro jobs (file name, size, page counts, status, and credits charged) so it can show them on your account page. The free converter does not require an account.
Pro PDF conversion
Pro is server-side. The selected PDF is uploaded to GetMarkdown's conversion service on Cloudflare (Workers and R2 storage), where it is inspected for a quote, converted, and packaged as a download.
When a PDF has scanned pages that need OCR, when the layout engine cannot extract usable text from it, when it has more than 300 pages, or when you request images, the PDF file is sent to Datalab, which converts it (including text recognition) and returns the result.
- Uploads that are never started are deleted within 2 hours.
- Finished outputs are deleted 48 hours after the job finishes.
- Account, credit, and job records needed to show your history, reconcile a payment, or diagnose a service failure may be retained separately from document contents.
Payments
Stripe handles checkout, subscriptions, the billing portal, and payment-card processing for Pro credits and plans. GetMarkdown does not receive or store full payment-card details. Stripe processes payment information under its own privacy terms.
Service providers
- Vercel hosts the website.
- Clerk provides accounts and email sign-in.
- Cloudflare (Workers and R2) processes and stores Pro uploads and outputs.
- Datalab performs OCR on scanned pages and converts PDFs the in-house engine cannot handle.
- Stripe processes payments and billing.
Site analytics
GetMarkdown uses Vercel Analytics and Simple Analytics to understand aggregate site usage. Analytics may receive ordinary page-request and device information. File contents are not intentionally included in analytics events.
Your choices
Use the free converter when local processing is appropriate. Do not use Pro for a document if you are not authorized to send it to a server or to the service providers listed above, or if a contractual, legal, or organizational policy prohibits that processing.
